Information on Diplomas

The 14-19 Diplomas offer a mix of classroom learning, creative thinking and practical hands-on experience. Designed to provide preparation for employment or further study, they have been created in close co-operation with people from the respective industries so that the educational experience is one that is valued by employers as well as demonstrating the student’s potential to universities and colleges.

The Diplomas are offered at different levels:

  • The Foundation Diploma, which is broadly equivalent to five GCSEs and can be started in Year 10 or above.
  • The Higher Diploma, which is broadly equivalent to seven GCSEs and can be started in Year 10 or above.
  • The Advanced Diploma, which is equivalent to three and a half A levels and can be started in Year 12 or above.
  • There is also the Progression Diploma, which is broadly equivalent to two and a half A levels and can be started in Year 12 or above and can be combined with other qualifications.
  • From 2011 there will be a larger Extended Diploma available at all three levels and at Level 3 is likely to be equivalent to four and a half A levels.
