A levels are classed as level 3 qualifications in the National Qualifications Framework and are usually studied over a two year period. They are graded A-E with allocated UCAS Tariffs points (A = 120, B = 100, C = 80, D = 60, E = 40) and an A* grade is being introduced in 2010.
AS levels are awarded based on exams and assessment at the end of the first year of the A level course, and have corresponding UCAS Tariff points (A = 60, B = 50 etc.). Students can then decide whether to leave with AS levels or continue to complete the A level course.
Typical A level subjects available to students for progression in the creative industries include Art and Design, Design and Technology, Drama and Theatre Studies, Media Studies and Music.
Entry requirements for further and higher education in arts subjects often specify number of A levels, UCAS Tariff points, subjects and even grades in particular subjects. Some courses may have a preference for students who have additional qualifications to A levels; for example, undergraduate degree level Art courses may recommend that candidates complete a Foundation Studies course in Art and Design.
Many A levels offer the opportunity for students to complete an extended project as part of the course. In arts subjects, this can provide useful material for portfolios, to assist in the application process for further and higher education.
