Once application forms have been submitted, they will be reviewed by the appropriate admissions tutors who will select candidates for interview. Although the application forms provide background on qualifications and previous experience, most specialist institutions want to get to know prospective students and their current work and interests before offering a place on a course. Many invite applicants for interview days, open days or audition events depending on the subject. Interviews allow the admissions tutors to see evidence of the creative potential, ability and passion of the applicants.
Most interviews are held on week-days and candidates are usually asked to travel to the institution. In some cases, there may be telephone interviews or interviews via 'live' email exchange. The interview process is two-way: it provides the opportunity to talk about a student’s aspirations, what inspires their work and why they want to study that particular course at that institution; it also allows the student to ask questions and the staff can explain what their institution can offer.
Interviews for arts subjects often require portfolios or auditions.
