Blurring the Boundaries: Exploring NALN's Pre for HE Courses.
The Preparation for Higher Education (‘Prep for HE’) FE to HE bridging course prepares students from widening participation backgrounds in their second-year of a National Diploma to apply and progress to Higher Arts Education (HAE), leading from pre-application stage to HE entry. The course ran in parallel at two institutions over two years: Central Saint Martins College and, as a pilot, at Hereford College of Arts.
Emily Candela, Researcher and report writer for the project, presented on aspects on the courses’ curriculum content and pedagogy that address barriers that non-traditional students have been shown by previous research to face in applying and making the transition to HAE.
These aspects include HE level literacy skills, including the critical thinking and independent research demands of HAE and support, both formal and informal from FE and HE tutors involved on the course that was shown to increase students’ confidence, prepare them for the interview process and ease the transition to HAE.
The presentation will also address how the models of Bridging and Preparation for HE are being sustained at both institutions. Emily’s presentation was supported by practitioners and Progression Managers from both institutions.
