The findings of a recent major longitudinal survey involving 3,500 graduates in art, design, craft and media subjects reveals that these graduates are indeed ‘moving forward’ and are at the forefront in initiating changes in the creative industries. Their tolerance of uncertainty and ability to adapt and continue to learn fits them for contemporary life and work in a sector with high levels of self-employment and portfolio working. The resourcefulness of creative graduates and their determinants for successful and satisfying lives provide new career models for the 21st century that have a wider significance for society as a whole.
This study provides important evidence about what is distinctive about creative graduates, their educational experiences and their working lives and raises questions for the creative curriculum and how HEIs are preparing students for the modern workplace. The Workshop invited participants to raise current issues for the curriculum in response to the findings to inform the second stage of the research to be published in Spring 2010.
