Gender, culture and visual imagery in higher education: is HE now feminised?
Women students now outnumber men at undergraduate level in many countries and disciplinary areas, including in the arts in the UK. Indeed, it has been argued that nowadays it is men who are disadvantaged in higher education, so should the widening participation agenda now be focused primarily on men? In this lecture I will consider the extent to which HE might be seen as a ‘feminised’ arena. However, rather than being feminised, I will suggest that the culture and practices of HE remain predominantly masculinised. In particular, I will draw on an analysis of visual images of students and academics to explore the ways in which these are infused with traditional constructions of masculinity and femininity.
