Research undertaken over the last few years has identified a number of barriers for vocationally qualified applicants (BTEC Nationals, VCE/Applied A levels) to degree courses across a range of subjects and different types of universities. And it has shown also where progress has been made in breaking down some of the barriers (see our most recent report Vocational Qualifications and Admissions: two years on, published by Action on Access, May 2008). This workshop will focus on where changes have been made, including in admissions practices, improving knowledge of different qualifications, monitoring admissions decision-making and student progress and better use of statistics internally. It will encourage participants to discuss how these could be applied more/better in the art and design area and where particular under-represented groups might benefit most, and also share their current experiences of implementing change in admissions practices.
