Internships- Counting the cost

The development of a career in the arts and media is a complex process, and the first step into industry is increasingly an internship. These are highly sought after, particularly in the most competitive areas. Heated debate surrounds this aspect of the creative industries, and the ethics of unpaid opportunities as a first step towards a successful career.

Students, employers, Sector Skills Councils and arts bodies have been discussing new methods and codes of practice to ensure that the internship process is fair, open and of a consistently high quality.

Discussion centred around:

• What do we mean by internships?
• Why are internships crucial for emerging workers?
• How accessible are internships?
• The Arts Group solution
• Guidelines for employers
