The FE:HE interface

This workshop brought together themes from two distinct but inter-related projects that attempt to integrate FE and HE progression work. The session discussed common themes and areas for concern for FE and HE staff involved in curriculum development for 14-19 Creative and Media Diplomas and seeks to identify ways of supporting students who are making the transition from FE vocational pathways into study at HE.

Both presenters have been working with partners in FE and HE to develop initiatives that can offer practical solutions to some of the real and perceived barriers to progression, experienced by applicants from non-traditional entry routes.

‘Creative Connections’ was a collaborative project between the APSCAD partners led by Hereford College of Arts and focusing on the FE curriculum. Findings from initial action research informed the development of an on line learning resource designed to address key FE curriculum areas including enterprise learning, creativity in context and thinking and working creatively.

‘Portfolio Focus’ was a collaborative project between Norwich University College of The Arts and Gateway Two 14–19 Consortium led by City College Norwich. Focus groups of HE and FE staff and students explored work from curricula and identified areas of future challenge for HE applicants in terms of scope and format. Findings highlighted issues relating to FE/HE staff perceptions of course curriculum and information management.
